As you are possibly aware from my previous articles, I have a shortlist of my top six favorite cheap mp3 players on my BuyCheapMp3Players site.

A couple of my top six are lower end of the price range machines from brand name manufacturers (Apple iPod and Sony).

Most people will be pretty familiar with these two companies and the quality of the products that they produce. Also, most of mp3 players that they have produced have been covered in some depth elsewhere, on review sites, in press reports and the like.

I therefore see little point in recovering well trodden ground by describing these machines in any detail.

What I would like to do instead is go into a little more detail with a short comparative review of a couple of cheap mp3 players from lesser known manufacturers.

Both of these machines, in my opinion, beautifully encapsulate the reasoning behind my impartial recommendation to buy a cheap mp3 player, rather than perhaps wasting our money on an expensive brand name machine.

The simple fact is that there are many cheap mp3 players that offer great quality at exceptional prices, and why pay more than you need to?

In other words, the two players that I have highlighted below simply provide tremendous value for money, and who amongst us doesn’t want that?

iRiver iFP-700 (780T model – 128MB – @$60)

The first point to note about this player is the great sound quality, and my previous articles have all attempted to highlight how important this is. The bass response, in particular, is simply outstanding, making this a very good choice for those who will use their mp3 player mainly to listen to rock music, hip hop and the like.

The 128MB available to you translates into something like four hours of music, well within the lifespan capacity of the battery, which can easily last twenty hours plus in normal use.

It will play MP3, WMA & OGG music files, and can record from any sound source, not just through your PC. It also features an FM radio, is pretty resistant to the skips and jumps that are often a feature of Flash based players, and weighs in at just 3 grams!

So, there are a heck of a lot of good things that you can say about the 780T, making it an outstanding buy in its class and price range for me.

I do, of course, have a couple of small gripes!

First, the radio reception is often not particularly good. Obviously this is only relevant if you are interested in listening to radio, but, it is something to be aware of.

Second, I found the earphones a little difficult to use, and pretty uncomfortable into the bargain. Not that the 780T is unique in this, and, of course, earphones can be bought separately, but I didn’t really like the standard phones that come with the 780T.

That being said, it is still a very, very good example of what you get if you buy a cheap mp3 player, and for the price, it is exceptional value for money.

SanDisk Sansa e100 (e140 – 1GB – $80)

This one comes with 1GB memory, so it obviously has the ability to load up considerably more music than the 780T above.

Again, this is five star mp3 player, great quality from a lesser known name, that can play mp3 or WMA files, weighs in at 0.4ozs and has a battery life of 15 hours continuous playback.

Also like the 780T, this one offers terrific sound quality, with its "TruBass" feature again adding considerably to the response at the lower end of the tonal scale.

The controls are extremely ergonomically laid out and are simple to use, and the backlit LCD screen, allied to the detailed album and/or song information shown on it, make this a very easy player to actually operate.

It has the added advantage that there is no requirement for special software to load songs on to it – simple Windows "drag and drop" is all that is required – and for pure functionality, the Sansa e140 is pretty hard to beat.

Again like the 780T, downsides are very few.

There does seem to be a noticeable (and slightly irritating) gap between tracks playing on the e140, but this seems to be a feature (or fault) that I have found with some other Flash based players a well, so maybe it is an inherent fault of the technology, rather than the manufacturers.

I also, once again, found the earphones uncomfortable, but (given the frequency that this appears to be the case) maybe I should blame that on the shape of my own ears, rather than on the phones!

In conclusion, the iRiver 780t and the SanDisk Sansa e140 represent all that is good about the idea of buying a cheap mp3 player!

Both retail for well under $100 in the high street or local mall, but, before buying, don’t forget to check the special eBay deals from my signature at the bottom of this page for extra cheap prices!

Both offer great sound quality, excellent functionality, light weight and good looks.

So, your choice is pretty simple.

Do you want to pay the extra $30 or so necessary to move up from four hours of music with the iRiver 780T to the fifteen hours or so (before a battery change becomes necessary) with the Sansa e140? Otherwise, there is so little to choose between them….

As they say, you pays your money, you takes your choice!

HD radio and sound quality are the advantages that the Zune Video MP3 Player has over all similar devices on the market. Music comes in rich and the bass is good. HD radio comes in with CD quality sound and you can also tag songs if you wish to buy it later. There’s a quick play feature that takes all the songs in your collection and creates a playlist that matches the genre or mood you want. If you also own an Xbox 360, you can sync the Zune HD with the console and play or even purchase music and movies this fall. It is a disadvantage that you’ll have to wait for this, but Microsoft is putting in the final touches before they do.

The included software is no different from others available. You can sync libraries easily with right click or drag-and drop albums and videos right onto the device. If you have a bunch of movies in AVI, you may want to get a converter (the standard formats are WMV and MP4). All MP3s can work with the program, regardless of DRM. If you like buying a CD every month, Zune Pass lets you have unlimited downloads plus 10 to keep each month for $15/ month. You can only burn tracks that you buy with points or the 10 freebies you get, but this is highway robbery if you choose to keep it all on the Zune HD or PC! Movies are also available, for rent or to own, and TV shows either in standard or HD. The Zune Video MP3 Player costs $220 for 16 Gigs and $290 for 32. Just remember this is not necessarily for web browsing or game playing though, the iPods are better for these things.

Digital Rights Management has a whole slew of limits and limited accesses, such as allowing certain files to play on iPods but not on Creative Zen players or RCA Lyras, and so on.

The simplest way around this is to download music only from the sites that are compatible with your portable device to ensure that you won’t be wasting money buying downloadable music that you don’t actually work on your MP3 player. More complicated methods could involve illegal activity, or breaking copy-right infringement laws, so tread carefully.

As stated before, getting music into a portable device follows a general procedure. And once you start to download music to a MP3 player you’ll be amazed at how easy the entire process really is.

Moving on, let s look at the most crucial question of them all.

If my previous ramblings have convinced you that to get a great mp3 player, you do not necessarily have to spend a vast amount of money, then you can see that to buy an inexpensive mp3 player makes sense, right?

So, let us define our terminology here. When discussing a cheap mp3 player, what level of cheap are we speaking about?

Even a casual, lazy stroll around a few websites will produce a lot of mp3 players that are very, very cheap indeed!

We are talking of 128MB players (which translates to around 30-35 songs, or approximately two and a half to three hours of music) which can be bought straight from China for less than $20! And, believe it or not, that includes a 12 month guarantee as well!

But, in the case of the particular machines that I have found and am looking at, there are many clear disadvantages right out of the box that would definitely dissuade me, as an experienced mp3 user, from even considering it!

As mentioned previously, when you buy a cheap mp3 player direct, online, the pre-eminent risk is that the sound quality might well be very be poor, and that, by definition, you cannot test it to see if this is the case before you buy.

If it can be manufactured and sold for less than $20 (accepting that this is in the low manufacturing cost environs of Asia) you have to question what grade of parts are likely to be utilized when it is being made?

I would be willing to bet my home on the quality of all component parts being poor or indeed very poor, and on the quality of the sound being extremely average at best.

Also, do not forget that that the vast majority of cheap mp3 players are of a model type termed Flash players, rather than the solid state type players more commonly found at the more expensive end of the mp3 spectrum. This means they contain moving parts, in this case, certainly exceedingly cheap moving parts.

This introduces two additional risks. The prime clear risk is the higher risk of breakages. The second, less critical, (but far more irritating) risk is that Flash based players can be like the old mobile CD players, in that they can have an inclination to jump or skip whilst playing.

Pretty clearly, again, this is a problem that is far more probable to manifest itself in a player that is priced at less than $20 than it is in the case of one that is more up-market, and accordingly better made!

Granted, it carries a full 12 month guarantee, but just how easy is that likely to be to enforce?

In truth, given that the player costs less than $20, how likely are you to actually try to take advantage of the warranty should the machine break, in any event?

It is essentially worthless, in my opinion.

So, for these reasons, I would ignore the super cheap $20 mp3 players.

The reality is that, in order to get something genuinely worth having, something that will do justice, in terms of sound quality, to your music anthology, you need to consider mp3 players that cost less than $200.

This is the mark in the sand that I used when compiling my top 6 cheap mp3 players.
