Mp3 Player Accessories  Designed By Techies Just Don’t Cut It

element mp3 player reviewBack in the day, I took my Sony Walkman out for a run and I thought I had the world by the short hairs. I was king of the block, which was the legal distance I was to travel as per the laws of my mom. Nonetheless, I was a huge fish in a bowl full of guppies that hadn’t seen a real life Walkman in the flesh (or chips and wires, in this case). I’d roam the block with my friends pausing occasionally to remove an earphone to listen where the conversation had meandered. But for the greater part of the day, and largely to appear cool and aloof, I remained earphoned. I carried the black, shiny, tape player in my hand for all to adore. I saw people gawking at the cigar-boxed sized, technological wonder that nearly fit into my hands grip. ‘What will they think of next?’ was a common reaction.

My buddy Brad received a Walkman for his birthday later that year. Shortly after, Paul got one from his parents, just because. My specialty quickly became regularity and I learned about the word ‘temporary’. Within a few weeks I remembered that my hand had cramped a few weeks back. Popularity muted the pain and it began to feel utterly ‘not cool’. I started walking with the Walkman much less frequently. We’d sometimes get together for a field trip bus ride or maybe a solo late night rocker in my bedroom.

Some months later I’d noticed a grown up man walking around looking like a dork, or so I perceived from my judgemental 11-year old’s perspective. He had my model Walkman strapped to his arm as he walked, aerobic style around the neighborhood. He was wearing a matching warm-up outfit. At that moment the executive decision had been made and the decree read aloud from the hilltop: Walkman(s) are to be carried discreetly, so as not to appear ‘the dork’.

Armbands, therefore, became the accessory of the dork.

Today, miles from 11 years old, I’m watching a similar trend. Apple has cornered the market on this groundbreaking technology that empowers every cad to carry a solid chunk of their digital music with them where ever it is they go. If Sony had made the leap it would have been called the Walk-midget! And just like that, music had begun its painful foray into the digital age. People from 10 to 70 can be seen wandering the streets with white buds a-poppin from their heads, leading to a well placed, often hidden, iPod Nano, Classic, Mini, Shuffle or whatever model you think defines YOU based on your favorite iPod commercial. Some outliers have picked up the Samsung or Creative in place of the iPod… choose your poison.

‘Welcome to the digital age. We have armbands, too. Remember the armband for the Walkman? Awesome right? Ours are JUST like those! In fact, we make armbands that fit only one device! And, in 2 years, when your device dies (thanks to a built-in predictable failure rate) you can buy a new armband that will fit this new device and nothing else!’

That sign should be placed at the front of the Apple Store and in Best Buy’s mp3 player section.

OK, I know you, Mr/Ms Reader. You are a smart person with an understanding of the world around them, right? So about now you might be thinking ‘Where’s he going with this? What’s his pitch?’

It’d be insulting if I told you I had no pitch, so here goes.

LimbGear is my company. We make mp3 Accessories for the Active Lifestyle. We’re determining our best routes to market right now and have opened up our website with one product, the I-Sleeve. It’s a bullet proof armband designed to carry and protect your iPod/mp3 player much more functionally than anything out there. It’s got an extra pocket for cash, key, ID… I fit my bike tool in there when I mountain bike.

So there! I hope you enjoyed my misleading sales pitch disguised as an article!
